Artist Talk

FAVSC is honoured to host the artist talk of Schimpfluch Gruppe (Dave Philips and Rudolf Eb.Er) on the eve of their tour of Australia and New Zealand. An uncompromising experimental performance group that had its genesis in Switzerland in the mid-eighties, Schimpfluch Gruppe are exponents of "psycho-physical tests and trainings", a methodology of extreme duration and extreme physicality in performance. Pushing the body to its limits in a live context, Dave and Rudolf will present video footage rarely seen outside of Europe. This is a unique opportunity to gain insights into the origins, motivation and desires of Switzerland's influential Schimpfluch Gruppe.

Last night saw the festival kick off in Sydney with a suitably twisted, bizarre, irreverent, and unpredictable set of performances. Don’t say Liquid Architecture doesn’t know how to laugh. :: :: :: End of Symbiosis party :: :: ::

Symbiosis on 3RRR 102.7 FM in Melbourne, long time Liquid Architecture supporter, finished this week. Help Simon celebrate, commemorate, and commiserate at the Christopher Willits show tomorrow night (Saturday 30th June). From Simon;

Hello dear friends,

This week marked the end of Symbiosis on Triple R. I have wrapped it up due to work and impending study commitments. But we’re going to go out with a bang!

This Saturday come down to North Bazaar for an audio-visual feast. Christopher Willits is in town from San Francisco and he will be performing a special hour-long audio visual set just for us. I will be djing alongside friends of Symbiosis, Touch Typist will grace us with their dulcet tones and I would love to have a drink with you all.

And the blurb..

Christopher Willits is a musician and multimedia artist located in San Francisco, California. Striking a delicate balance between acoustic and electronic sounds and systems, Christopher manages to defy genre distinctions while still defining a ‘sound’ unto his own.

His recent album for Ghostly International 'Surf Boundaries' captured the pure essences of pop song writing and buried them deep inside an unusual shell of post-production, the resulting album being hailed as one of the most original visions of pop influenced abstract electronica.

Cheers,

Simon

:: :: :: :: Peter Newman :: :: :: ::
Peter Newman is an emerging artist based in Sydney who primarily produces time-based works for both installation and performance. His practice is concerned with intuitively drawing from both digital technologies and organic artmaking methodologies in aspiring towards a seamless fluidity of process, ultimately offering an abstract cinema for the ears and eyes. He is driven by a need to explore the complex nature of time and its perception, and to produce work which exists firmly within it, devoid of an abstract critical distance. Newman has performed or exhibited around Australia in varying capacities at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the 2004 and 2006 Sydney Big Day Out music festival, and numerous artist-run spaces such as First Draft and Phatspace. Several of his sound and video works travelled to South Korea last year to be part of the Seoul Fringe Festival and Gwangju Biennale.

SPACIOUS SOUNDS ARTIST FEATURE

:: :: :: :: Lloyd Barrett :: :: :: ::
Performing at Liquid Architecture 8 in Sydney.

"There is no auditory container for sounds... music communicates with all times and all spaces of a film, even as it leaves them to their separate and distinct existences" (Michel Chion: 1990).

For well over a decade, Australia's Lloyd Barrett has been issuing all manner of intricate sound works – from diligent examinations of postconcréte sound and abstracted rhythmic projects to spacious ambient works.

In 2005, he committed himself to create Mise en Scene, which he will present at Liquid Architecture 8, a work drawing on the concepts of filmic sound and exploring the possibilities of philosophies suggested by authors and theorists such as Michel Chion. The resulting album heralds a bold statement of intent from Barrett. Deeply evocative, maintaining moments of extreme intimacy and vast remoteness, this record is characterised by highly realised imagined sonic language. It speaks to the notions of acousmatic composition and delivers a document rich with decomposed found sound, unfamiliar texture and instrumental passages reflective of electroacoustic methodology.

Performing at Liquid Architecture 8 in Brisbane and Melbourne.
Jon Dale writes about Nigel’s 3” CDR release Tapir, in The Wire Issue 272 October 2006; “New Zealand's Nigel Wright is part of a loose conglomerate of artists, circling around the CMR label, who have found new ways to approach computer music. Wright works with big, weighty chunks of sound and his palette is all oppresive greyscale and flickering hints of kaleidoscopic colour. He uses laptop to weather and and rust his guitars strings, ricocheting hefty down-strummed chords through cavernous banks of effects and then watching the overtones drift in the distance, like trailing headlights captured on polaroids. Sometimes Wright's music suggests the early releases on German techno label Chain Reaction if they were stripped of all rhythm; on the evidence of Tapir, however, I wouldn't be surprised if soon he was spoken of in the same breath as Tim Hecker and Christian Fennesz.”

Presenting the launch of the Artefacts CD at Liquid Architecture 8 in Brisbane and Melbourne.
SHAME FILE Music has two main arms of operation: a mailorder catalogue of quality Australian experimental music releases, and a small label producing releases mainly connected with the musical output of Clinton Green (Undecisive God), as well as compilation releases. The label was born in 1990 and saw a decade of cassette releases before moving to CD in 2000. The label name, SHAME FILE, was taken from the Hinch current affairs TV programme of the time, which had a regular segment of that name listing various dodgy tradesmen, conmen, asian queue-jumping paedophiles, etc. Despite the negative connotations, Shame File continues to be an important outlet for experimental Australian sound work. As Clinton says, “I am mainly thinking of artists whose work I really admire but who are unheard of by many, due to the artist’s lack of a supporting record label or their own resources to self –release their material on a substantial scale.”

Minimal and maximised sounds weave without sounding unfocused. Microscopic worlds that are zoom-lensed into grainy focus, alien and yet vaguely familiar, an emotive call from the distance.

All this delivered via intense, audience frightening ‘aktion’ performances that will undoubtedly shock. See Rudolf’s amazing, disturbing paintings at his website.

Expect shocking performances designed to unsettle, disturb and make your skin crawl.

Performing at Liquid Architecture 8 in Melbourne
For a decade Sydney based Lucas Abela (aka Justice Yeldham and the Dynamic Ribbon Device) has travelled the globe grinding his face into a sheet of amplified plate glass. As he screams and hyperventilates onto it and then pulls and squeezes at the sheet, the noise generated wildly varies and wavers as it is run through some pedals and processing that results in an orgy of speaker rattling noise. Expect nausea, saliva, blood, fresh wounds and sickly sounds.

:: :: :: :: Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine :: :: :: ::
Performing at Liquid Architecture 8 in all 3 cities.
Through the magic of mirrors, multiple projectors and highly ingenious live on stage editing, this French audiovisual performance group produce and direct a new film with each of their performances. Working around a core narrative, they spill eddies of impromptu vignettes, accompanied by a live soundtrack of tape fragments and ancient synthesiser sounds. These three collaborators, Jérôme Noetinger, Christophe Auger and Xavier Quérel, have worked together for ten years, and have succeeded in pushing the boundaries of film and soundtrack into the realm of live performance.
